On Friday 09.15.2017, the White House Press Secretary Sara Huckabee Sanders announced that the administration would announce its immigration policies in the next 7- 10 days. There are reports that state that the Congressional leaders, Democrats and the President are working on finding a legislative fix on the DACA program. The President earlier announced that the DACA program was cancelled and that the Congress will come up with a legislative fix by March 2018.
There have been meetings between the President and Democrat leaders last week to discuss the same. However, it has been informed that a deal or policy pertaining to the DACA program has not yet been finalized.
There was a Tweet from the President in which he stated that “chain migration cannot be allowed to be part of any legislation”.
The term "chain migration" refers to immigrants coming to a country based on a connection to family. Chain immigration is when an immigrant who receives legal status and uses his status to immigrate his family members to the US.
This is one of the major concern which is being considered while the Congress is working to find a legislative solution for the DACA program. The question is, if legal status is given to the recipients of the DACA program, they will or might use this to in turn get status for their immediate as well as extended family members.
No specific details have been shared by the White House officials as yet with regards to what the policy will include and other details. It also did not specify if the policy would include pathway to citizenship or not. The administration informed that it will lay out its policies very soon.
The administration reiterated that they want the program to be taken care of and handled appropriately.
The policy announcement is expected to include massive border security and interior enforcements. It is also expected to have regulations relating to sanctuary city, more immigration judges, support to bills like the RAISE Act.
