The terror attack carried out at the Port Authority Bus terminal in midtown Manhattan on Monday December 11, 2017 has again brought up the issue of immigration and border protection.
The White House has called on Congress to overhaul the immigration system, stating that an attack in New York City is evidence that the U.S. needs to strengthen its border security.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters “We must protect our borders and we must ensure that individuals entering our country are not coming to do harm to people, and we must move to a merit-based immigration system”
The identified suspect entered the United States 7 years ago though family based immigrant visa. This has again risen the question of chain migration. The program is already being considered to be rescinded.
President Mr. Trump has already called for an end to chain migration previously. The administration mentioned that if the program was not in place it could have prevented individual like the suspect in the terror attack from coming to the United States.
It is expected that the president is aggressively going to continue to push forth responsible immigration reform, and ending chain migration would certainly be a part of that process.
